BERTRAM LAWN TENNIS CLUB MAY 2011 NEWSLETTER
|
A warm welcome to our members,
The summer tennis season at Bertram is now well underway. Our league teams have already played four games each and we expect some more tough games as we seek to consolidate our positions in the Wirral League divisions we have worked so hard to aspire to in recent seasons. We are giving youth more of an opportunity to play on Tuesdays, but a number of them are revising hard for GCSE’s this year so we wish them every success on and off the courts. We have increased the numbers of juniors and mini-tennis players being coached by Sarah and we are running four junior’s teams in Wirral and County competitions.
We are always looking for willing people to help out at the club with teams, events and general club maintenance so if you have any free time or some great ideas then please do share it with us.
We have a full programme of activities taking place at the Club and some details are provided below – so let’s see you getting involved and I look forward to seeing you down at the club.
Glyn Morgan, Chairman
QUIZ NIGHT – FRIDAY 3rd JUNE (From 8.30pm)
|
Come along and enter Paul Evan’s great quiz. Bring your own team or just turn up and we will find you a team to join in with. There are general knowledge questions, music questions and dingbats to complete.
The Bar is always open and Dave Hay provides some excellent suppers.
AMERICAN TOURNAMENT – SATURDAY 4th JUNE (3.00pmStart)
|
These tournaments are organized so that every standard of player over 14 can join in and enjoy the games. After every 10 minutes of so of playing doubles you move up or down the courts depending on how you scored in your short match. You get to play with and against different players almost every match, and earn a cumulative games score, with the best performers then playing a final doubles set at the end to determine our winners. Trophies are then presented. Why not give it a go – it’s a great way to meet new people.
ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
|
Entry forms are now laid out in the Clubhouse – just put your name against the event(s) you wish to enter. There is a £2 entry fee for each event payable to Glyn Morgan to fund the trophies which will be formally presented on 9th September. ENTRIES MUST BE MADE BY FRIDAY 10th JUNE to allow the draws to take place. Finals Day will be in July. It’s a tight schedule, so please ensure you are available to complete your matches without undue delay. The full events and rules will appear in the Clubhouse and on the Website.
Sarah will be organizing all the Junior and Mini-tennis events.
WARM UP TO WIMBLEDON – SATURDAY 18th JUNE from 3pm
|
A new event is planned in June to celebrate the start of Wimbledon. It’s essentially for members and past members (all your family are invited), but of course your friends and new members are most welcome. It’s a Club Open and Social day with fun tennis activities, junior coaching, a Barbecue, music, and entertainment stalls including, balloon and jewellery making, face painting, white elephant, and more kids entertainment. Strawberries and cream, ice cream and Pimms will of course be available, and the Bar will be open throughout. Weather permitting we will also hold an outdoor Table Tennis competition. Bring your rackets and wear sensible shoes for the courts, but more than that bring your sense of humour and get to meet new people and old friends. (Donations of all kinds welcomed for the White Elephant stall.)
CASINO NIGHT – SATURDAY 25th JUNE - (Starts 8.00pm)
|
Why not dress up and come to our James Bond themed casino Night? Tickets are on sale now for £10, which includes your playing chips on the Wheel of Fortune, Blackjack table and Roulette; then spend your winnings at the auction that follows. The Bar will be open for your Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred.
The casino opens at the Clubhouse from 8pm and will admit Juniors aged 13 and over and their glamorous parents (members & friends) – Dress suits and fancy evening dresses would certainly add to the occasion. RAG BAG OUTDOOR TEXTILE RECYCLING BANK
|
We now have a ‘Rag Bag’ textile recycling bank outside by the Clubhouse. Through Rag Bag we are able to help recycle textiles and clothing that may have ended up going to landfill. If we can divert some of the tonnage away from landfill we will directly help the environment and help provide good quality clothing to some of the poorest developing nations of the world. The Club also gains a contribution to our operating funds. The bank can accept all men’s, ladies and children’s clothing, paired shoes (tied together), handbags, bags, ties, belts, soft toys, blankets, underwear and household textiles such as towels, bed linen, and curtains. It cannot accept duvets, carpets, or soiled or wet clothing.
You can also donate unwanted textbooks, novels etc (but not magazines or newspapers), they are all reused. Please bag up textiles in separate bags to any books, and just throw them into the collection bank.

SCHOOLS VOUCHERS
A huge thank you to everyone who has dropped off Sainsbury’s vouchers to our collection box in the club house. The promotion has now finished in store but if anyone has any unwanted vouchers the drop off box will be left in the clubhouse until June 14th.
CLUBHOUSE KEYS
|
By popular demand we are now able to offer a set of Clubhouse keys to adult members.
We will of course be recording all issues for control purposes and we do have to ask for a refundable deposit of £25 for each set. If you want the convenience of being able to open up and use the facilities at any time please call Dave Martin on 0151 632 5551.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS
|
Just a reminder for those who have not yet sent their annual membership renewal forms in, that fees are now overdue and we would appreciate receipt as soon as possible to be able to plan our expenditure and events budget for the full year. Membership forms are available in the Clubhouse or by calling the Secretary on 0151 632 4895. Thanks.
